Small Single Mattresses

A small single mattress is the perfect size for kids transitioning to their first 'proper' bed, or for smaller rooms where space is at a premium. But don't be fooled by their size - while a small single mattress might be slightly narrower than a regular single mattress, they're just as long, and feature the same, sleep-enhancing technology that provides a sumptuous, supportive night's rest.

The benefits of a small single mattress

While a small mattress is ideal for children, adults may also find a narrow single mattress as an ideal addition to their home. Our 2ft6 small single mattress is the perfect choice for anyone who wants to maximise their available space without sacrificing a good night's sleep.

They’re especially good for bedrooms that are on the smaller side and are the perfect fit for bunk beds, caravans, and narrow bed frames, as well as bench-type beds. These small mattresses also allow you to have a convenient option in your guest room should you have visitors staying overnight, they also go great with our small single divan beds.

Choosing your 2ft 6” mattress

While these mattresses all share the same size, there differ by filling and comfort grade. For example, we have pocket spring, traditional spring, latex, and memory foam options available. Factors such as your body type, the way you sleep, and whether you prefer a firmer or softer sleeping surface all comes into play when choosing your small single mattress. Popular mattress types include:

  • Standard sprung small single mattress: This classic type of mattress uses open springs to ensure weight is supported evenly while maintaining comfort.
  • Pocket sprung small single mattress: Similar to standard sprung, this type of mattress contains springs, however, these are individually wrapped to offer precise, targeted support.
  • Small single memory foam mattress: This is one of the most popular mattress types and uses foam to mould around the contours of your body. These mattresses are recommended to those who suffer from back pain.
  • Reflex foam small single mattress: This material is highly responsive and offers a supportive and firm surface.
  • Small single mattresses with natural fillings: Finally, these mattresses contain natural materials such as cotton, wool and cashmere. These are ideal if you have a child who suffers from allergies.

To find a new mattress that meets your specific needs and requirements, you can use our MattressFinder™ tool. Simply answer a few simple questions and you'll be paired with the perfect mattress type for you, then just select small single as your preferred size!

What size is a small single mattress?

The average small single mattress size is 75cm wide and 190cm long, which makes it the smallest mattress you can get. These 2ft 6” mattresses are particularly great for children who have grown out of cot mattresses.

For more information on whether a small single mattress size is right for you, read our Bed & Mattress Size Guide. If you're buying a small single mattress for a child, take a look at our Guide to Kid's Bed Sizes, too.

Which is the best small single mattress?

A small single mattress is ideal for a single bed that’s used in a child’s bedroom. Small mattresses are defined as those that measure 2ft 6”.

Small single mattresses are a great way to introduce a child that has outgrown their cot into the adult world of their very first 'big' bed. They might be small, but there’s no compromise on comfort or support from a 2’6 mattress.

When your child is ready for their bigger bed - usually around 4 years old and over - you'll find that small single mattresses include the same impressive features as most other mattresses. From pocket springs to memory foam, just keep in mind that you'll want a firm single mattress for your little one, as this will help support their growing body the best.

What is the difference between a single and a small single mattress?

Single mattresses are 190cm (6ft 3") long by 90cm (3ft) wide and are designed to fit a standard single bed. Small single mattresses are also 190cm (6ft 3") long, but are 75cm (2ft 6") wide, making them slightly narrower. This narrower mattress is ideal for children upgrading from a toddler bed but don't need the full width of a single mattress just yet.

What age is a small single mattress for?

Generally between the ages of 4 and 7, children grow out of their toddler bed and need something a bit bigger to keep them comfortable at night. A small single mattress is perfect in this situation, as it gives them just the right amount of room to wriggle around, without having unnecessary space taking up their room.
