Top 10 Tips for Buying a New Mattress

When looking for a new mattress, there are a whole host of different considerations that you should be thinking about. Do you know what to look for in a mattress? If you need some help buying a new mattress, we have collected ten of the most important aspects of choosing a mattress below.

1. Mattress type:

When buying a new mattress, there are different types of mattresses that suit different people. A pocket sprung mattress is one choice, with latex or memory foam mattresses also being popular. You may also be able to find a hybrid mattress that utilises both spring and memory foam technology to give you the best of both worlds. Which type of mattress you choose will be down to your specific needs and what you find most comfortable. Need help deciding which mattress type is right for you? Check out our pocket sprung vs memory foam vs hybrid mattress guide.

2. Mattress firmness:

There are several different levels of mattress firmness to choose from. You may choose from a soft mattress, a medium mattress or a medium-firm mattress. However, if you require more support you may choose a firm mattress or extra firm mattress. The firmness of a mattress can often be detected by touch - the feel of a mattress can tell you a lot. This can be quite subjective, but a softer mattress will give you a “sinking” feeling, while a firmer mattress will not provide this.

Mattress firmness is one of the key aspects to consider before purchasing a new mattress. If you select a unit that is too soft or too firm for you, then you are likely to not sleep well, and could even develop issues with your back and other joints. Considerations such as your body type, sleep needs and sleeping position will all impact the type of mattress firmness you need. Still unsure what firmness is right for you? Read our mattress firmness guide.

3. Mattress sizes:

You might find that one of the most important factors in deciding on the right mattress is the size. The UK and Europe have different specs for mattress sizes, so make sure you check the exact measurements before making your final decision on which mattress you want to choose. You will find single mattresses, double mattresses, king-size mattresses or queen-size (sometimes also three-quarter size and super-king size mattresses). Which size you want will depend on the size of your bedroom and who the mattress is for - you may only need a single bed for a small guest room or young person’s bedroom, but a couple might want to choose a double or king-size, depending on the overall look and size of your room.

4. Sleeping position:

There are three main sleeping positions that you should think about when you are shopping for a new mattress. You may be a side, back or front sleeper. Not every mattress is suitable for every type of sleeper, as different parts of your body will need support depending on your position - for example, a front sleeper may not be comfortable sleeping on a soft mattress. You can read up on our best mattresses for sleeping on your front or even the best type of mattress for side sleepers, depending on your preference.

5. Body type:

Different body types are more comfortable on different mattresses - not every body type is suitable for every mattress. For example, if you are heavier, you may find that a memory foam mattress is a good choice, while a lighter person may not prefer this. It would also be advisable for a heavier person to invest in a firmer mattress, which does not have as much “give”, and has more layers within it to provide increased support. To find out more, read our guide on the best mattresses for heavy people. If you are pregnant, you may find that a hybrid mattress works best for your changing needs - though you should at least avoid a soft mattress, as this may sag and become uncomfortable as your body changes.

6. Sleep needs:

As well as the other considerations mentioned, there are some sleep needs that you may have. For example, if you are a hot sleeper, you may require a mattress that ensures you do not overheat during the night and disturb your sleep. Unsure what mattresses can help cool you down at night? Read our guide about the best mattress for hot sleepers. There are other needs to consider, such as if you are an environmentally conscious person you will want to choose a vegan mattress or go with a company that is committed to preserving the environment, such as Hypnos. If you have joint or back pain, certain mattresses will be able to provide more support than others - such as a memory foam mattress.

7. Construction features:

Mattresses have different construction features which you should take into account when choosing your perfect fit. You may want to buy a new mattress that has extra edge support which can help you to sleep more soundly, or one that has “no roll together” technology to keep you and your partner separate during the night. Which features are important to you will again differ based on your specific needs.

8. Read customer reviews:

If you are looking for a mattress and want to know what it’s really like, reading customer reviews can be an invaluable way to do this. While a company may make a claim about a mattress, other customers have actually lived with and experienced it, so you can see if these claims are true. This can also be helpful when finding features that might be useful or less useful for you. While reviews should not completely dictate your decision, it can be a nice extra confidence boost to know you are making the right choice.

9. Mattress protection:

New mattresses need to be maintained in order to get the most from them and keep them in great condition. In order to do this, you should take care of your mattress by turning it to make sure one side does not become more used and damaged than the other. You can also clean your mattress frequently in order to keep it clean and fresh, and reduce the chances of any dirt buildup. Perhaps the best investment you can make once you have got your new mattress is a mattress protector. Not only can this keep your mattress safe from stains, but it can also make it a little more comfortable and extend its lifespan. For more information on how to keep your mattress in good condition, read our guide on how to clean your mattress.

10. Look at warranty:

When it comes to warranties, you may not immediately realise the importance of this. However, checking the warranty and the type of warranty that the mattress company provides may vary. A typical warranty may cover between ten and twenty years, but some may have a much shorter warranty. A warranty will usually cover a defect found with your mattress and some damages that may occur.

As you can see, there are many different things to think about when you are considering buying a new mattress online. With this handy guide, it should be just a little easier to find your perfect fit and sleep a little more deeply.
