What are bunk beds?

A bunk bed is the must-have bedroom accessory for children, designed to accommodate more than one occupant. A fun and quirky toddler bed, bunk beds for children offer a space saving solution, leaving more room for play. Our bunk bed frame styles range from futuristic grey double bunk beds to chic and functional kids’ storage beds, providing an option for every kid’s room.

Who are bunk beds suitable for?

Whether you're a top bunk kid or prefer the low bunks, our range of low-cost bunk beds are primarily suited to children over the age of 4. A super solution for saving space in a small bedroom, adult bunk beds are also available in neutral styles to suit any decor.

Why choose a bunk bed?

Childhood memories often revolve around sleepovers. The high to low beds for kids are perfect for midnight feasts, bedtime stories, and napping. A dream come true for parents, the vertical sleeping space design maximises space, making them ideal for smaller areas. Often coming with storage compartments within the beds bunk, the kid’s sleepers can de-clutter a room, allowing you to sort toys and games together in a tidy manner.

Do adult bunk beds exist too?

A fairly new innovation, bunk beds are also a fashionable option for grown-ups. Favoured by interior designers due to their space-saving function, double-decker beds offer a comfortable night’s sleep while leaving space to breathe. Adult bunk beds favour neutral shades, compared to the wackier and more creative designs of children’s sleepers. While the style may change, the function remains the same. Bunk beds for adults are suitable for shared areas, such as dorms, as well as smaller living spaces where space is at a premium.

Are bunk beds safe?

MattressNextDay puts safety first with their designs. Tailored primarily towards youngsters, we adhere to strict safety regulations, ensuring a safe, restful sleep. For enhanced safety, all our models feature top bunk guardrails, protecting against nightime movement. Babies and children below the age of 4 should stick to cots, graduating to sleeper bunks as they get older. It is recommended that a child younger than 6 should stick to the bottom bunk.

What sizes are bunk beds available in?

Bunk beds come in many shapes and sizes, suitable for a variety of needs. For rooms that need a narrower sleeping solution, our standard bunk beds have dimensions of 3ft x 6.3ft (90cm x 190cm/35in x 75in), great for saving space.

After something bigger? We also stock double, triple and quadruple sleepers, measuring in at 4ft x 6.3ft (120cm x 190cm/47in x 75in) in an array of inventive designs. What mattresses are suitable to use with bunk beds?

A bed is only as good as its mattress. This is no different when it comes to bunk beds. Thicker mattresses, such as memory foam models, may not be best suited. This is due to the inclusion of top bunk guardrails. it’s recommended that a top bunk mattress is kept at a maximum thickness of 15cm/6in to ensure a safe top rail height is maintained. For optimum comfort, our medium to firm pocket sprung offerings are an ideal bunk bed mattress. There’s also everything from specialist orthopaedic mattresses to a single mattress for standard beds available, guaranteeing a restful sleep. If you are looking to save space in your child's room, then you can always opt to get them a shorty mattress or a small single mattress, but make sure you have a bunk bed that is compatible with the mattress size.

What’s the difference between a double bunk bed and a triple bunk bed?

With so many bunk bed styles on offer, which do you choose? If you're torn between a double and triple bunk bed, consider your floor space and accommodation requirements. For the young social butterfly, or a sibling sleeping area, a double bunk bed stacks twin beds above each other. The most conventional design, these standard bunks house two occupants at a time.

Triple bunks come in two main types. There's the conventional two-tier triple, featuring a single bed above a double, great for guests and families. Three-tier triples stretch up high, making them suitable for larger room with extended vertical space. The key difference between the two styles lies in how many people can be accommodated at once. MattressNextDay stock both double and triple variations in a range of elegant designs.

What colours and styles of bunk bed are popular?

From clean, sleek metal designs to solid wood sleepers, our bunk bed range is suitable for all bedroom decors. Modern painted wood bunk beds are increasingly popular, while strong and sturdy pine-based beds are a classic and reliable option. A sharp and striking style, white bunk beds are a savvy way of getting light into a room. The vibrancy of the tone brings out other colours in the room, working well alongside a range of textures and fabrics.

Multi-functional bedroom furniture is another must-have for any small sleeping space, as evidenced by the popularity of storage bunk beds. Keeping rooms clutter-free and neat, storage bunk beds for kids feature hidden compartments and shelves, solving the problem of chaotic kids’ bedrooms. These popular bunk bed styles can be found in our expansive range, in various sizes and colours.
