Help & Buying Guides

How to choose the best new mattress

If you’ve never had to buy a new mattress before, you might not be sure where to start looking and what sort of mattress features to consider. After all, there are now multiple different mattress types available, not to mention the various firmness ratings you’ll need to understand to ensure you get a good night’s sleep.

That’s why we recommend you start your search by reading our mattress buying guide. Not only does it break down everything you need to know about buying a modern mattress, but it even goes into detail about which mattress types are best suited for each sleeping position.

What are the different types of mattresses?

From pocket spring mattresses and memory foam beds to hybrid mattresses that give you the best of both worlds, here is a quick breakdown of the core mattress types we have available:

Pocket sprung mattresses

With a pocket-sprung mattress, each spring is enclosed in its own fabric sleeve, allowing this type of mattress unmatched responsiveness to motion during sleep for consistent levels of comfort throughout the night.

As a result, these designs are usually available in a range of firmness levels, promoting good sleeping posture and being well-suited to front, side, and back sleeping positions.

Memory foam mattresses

Want that sense of warmth and snugness with your new mattress while also getting a mattress that will mould to you the more you sleep on it? Then memory foam might be for you.

A good memory foam mattress will make you feel as if you’re literally sinking into your sleep by contouring to your body’s shape. This makes them particularly useful if you suffer from back pain, and foam mattresses in general provide a good level of support that cushions the joints.

If you're not keen on that 'sink in' feeling but still want cushioning comfort that moulds to your body, consider a latex mattress or reflex foam mattress, which work similarly to memory foam.

Hybrid mattress

Also referred to as a ‘combination mattress', hybrid mattresses combine the best features of both memory foam - or other types of foam or natural fillings - and pocket mattresses to provide you with a bed that offers a phenomenal blend of support and comfort.

How do I know what mattress firmness to choose?

Every mattress has a comfort grade that ranges from soft through to extra firm, each of which is better suited to certain sleeping positions. Thus, choosing the best mattress firmness for you will very much depend on your personal preference alongside factors such as your size and weight.

Take a look at our table below to learn more about what each mattress firmness level offers or take a look at our mattress firmness guide:

Firmness ratingPropertiesSuitable for
SoftSoft feel, a lighter-than-air feeling, cushions and cocoons the body to keep it stable and relieve pressure points.
Side and some back sleepers who prefer the softer feel. Lighter and smaller sleepers who may find a firm mattress uncomfortable.
MediumA relatively balanced combination of comfort and support.
All sleepers, including front, back and side sleepers. Average-size sleepers.
Medium-firmSlightly firmer than a medium mattress – may benefit those with back issues who find orthopaedic mattresses too firm.
Ideal for front and side sleepers and those who prefer a slightly firmer feel. Suitable for average-size sleepers.
FirmOften referred to as 'orthopaedic', these are firmer to the touch, offering more support without compromising comfort.
Suitable for front sleepers and those who may benefit from a firmer mattress, such as larger or heavier users.
Extra firmVery firm to the touch, with less ‘bounce’ than softer options. Can be used to aid support for those suffering from back problems. Specialist support.
Suitable for front sleepers and those who are considerably larger or heavier. Not suitable for lighter users, who may find the firmness too rigid.

What’s the best mattress for my sleeping position?

From back sleepers to front sleepers, and every position in-between, there’s a mattress type out there for every. But to help make your search for the perfect mattress that much easier, we’ve provided a top-level explanation of the best mattress type for each sleeping position below.

Best mattresses for side sleepers

A good mattress for side sleepers is one that provides lots of cushioning and lets your hips and shoulders 'dip' enough into the surface of the mattress to keep your spine in alignment while you sleep. Memory foam and softer pocket-sprung mattresses are great for this, but a gel mattress may also be a good choice if you're looking for a cooler sleeping surface. We'd recommend a soft or medium firmness for sleeping on your side.

Best mattresses for back sleepers

When you sleep on your back, it’s important that you have a higher level of support to ensure your spine is correctly aligned, but enough cushioning to let your upper back and bottom dip into the mattress surface. If this is the case, then we recommend a pocket-sprung mattress with a medium or medium-firm tension.

Additionally, some people may prefer to choose an orthopaedic mattress if they want extra back care. Thus, when choosing the firmness of a mattress, we advocate a medium, medium-firm, or firm feel.

Best mattresses for front sleepers

Front sleepers will need more support than back sleepers, but less than a side sleeper would need. This makes hybrid mattresses with pocket springs a great choice, though only if they’re of a high firmness rating. A firm latex mattress with its higher density is also recommended for stomach sleepers.

What size mattress do I need?

What mattress size you need will come purely down to your preferred mattress size preferences and bedroom size. For example, if your bedroom is relatively small, you may only be able to use a single mattress or a small double mattress. On the other hand, if you have a large bedroom and want more space, you could pick a super king mattress.

For more insight into how big various mattress sizes are, take a look at our mattress table below or read our mattress size guide:

Firmly on the upper end of the mattress quality scale, our range of Vispring mattresses are guranteed to offer you incredible comfort, with a 30-year guarantee.

How much should a good mattress cost?

It goes without saying that mattresses from different brands will vary in price, mainly depending on how they’re made and what they’re made from, but it’s generally agreed that the more you pay for a mattress the better night’s sleep you’ll receive.

For example, cheaper mattresses might seem like a bit of a bargain, but they won’t necessarily provide long-term support and could cause more problems than they solve. There's no definitive answer for how much a good mattress should cost, as the definition of a 'good' mattress will differ from person to person.

What you pay for a mattress will also depend on what brand, guarantee, and comfort fillings you prefer. A Vispring mattress filled with hand-teased quality natural fibres and Vanadium steel springs will cost considerably more than a run-of-the-mill memory foam mattress, however, you should consider what's important to you when you choose your new mattress.

We offer a range of affordable mattresses with innovative technologies, such as our Coolflex range starting at well under £200 for a single mattress, and just over £200 for a double. On the upper end of the scale, a Harrison Spinks king size bed will cost you around £1000. Both of these brands offer full-body cushioning and support, but in very different ways.

We also offer a range of budget mattresses, as well as flexible payment options with Klarna to ensure everybody gets a good night's sleep, regardless of their circumstances.
