How to choose the best Which? Best Buy Mattresses

What does a Which? Best Buy award actually mean?

Which? is the biggest independent, unbiased consumer organisation in the UK, and has been testing and trialling a huge range of products and services for more than 60 years. Their mission is to champion product quality and safety, helping to raise standards across a number of consumer industries. Which? is a trusted brand, and their Best Buy lists are essentially their seal of approval, showing that they endorse certain products for performing strongly, being of high quality, and offering great value for money. All of the mattresses on their Best Buy list have been tested against their competitors by independent, knowledgeable and trustworthy product testers, meaning that you can buy your new mattress with confidence.

Which brands are included in the Which? Best Buy Mattress list?

Which? have given their seal of approval to mattresses from all sorts of well-known, household mattress names, such as Dunlopillo, Silentnight, SleepSoul and Sealy - as well as our own Pocket Plush Memory 2000 mattress.

How often should I replace my mattress?

The Sleep Council states that mattresses should be replaced either every seven years or when you begin to wake up with aches, pains or stiffness.

What are the signs that I need to replace my mattress?

You should replace your mattress if you notice that you sleep better in beds other than yours, or that you are sleeping less well than you were a year ago. The Sleep Council says that finding the right levels of space, comfort and support will mean that you are less likely to ache when you wake, will be disturbed less by your partner, and will wake and move around less in the night. You should also regularly inspect your mattress for any signs of damage, although be aware: if there is damage to your mattress that means it needs to be replaced, it may not be visibly obvious.

What is the best mattress for my sleeping position?

Those who sleep on their front should choose a firm mattress. If you sleep on your back, a medium-firm or firm mattress would suit best. However, if you tend to sleep on your side, you will want a mattress that moulds to fit the natural curve of your body, and that gives you the right level of cushioning - and here, a medium or soft mattress would suit you best.

What type of mattresses are included in the Which? Best Buy Mattresses list?

There are various types of mattress on the Which? Best Buy Mattress list. Choose a classic pocket-sprung mattress, where individual fabric pockets enclose the springs. Also popular are the newer, vacuum-packed "bed-in-a-box" options, which are usually made of latex, foam or a combination of the two. You can also buy hybrids of both bed-in-a-box and pocket-sprung mattresses.

How do I choose which mattress is right for me?

Some types of mattress will work better with certain bed frames than others, while the tensions and thickness of mattresses can also vary greatly. You will also want to choose a mattress with a filling that suits your needs, as the filling will offer different levels of comfort, warmth and more.
