A Guide to Storage Beds

A Guide to Storage Beds

With modern homes getting smaller, bedroom space in short supply, and all of us buying more ‘stuff’, a storage bed that offers you a great night’s sleep and somewhere practical to keep those seasonal clothes, kids toys, and blankets are a great idea.

Ottomans and divans provide a smart solution to your storage needs. They look great, and come in a huge range of sizes, styles, and designs. This guide will take you through the different types of frames that come with their very own storage capacity built-in.

What is a storage bed?

A storage bed is exactly what it says on the tin – a bed with storage space built in. All beds technically have an availability of storage space. But cramming boxes, old suitcases, and piles of magazines under your bed frame isn’t just messy, it’s a dust trap that can aggravate allergies and breathing conditions such as asthma. It’s also almost impossible to know what’s lurking underneath your mattress.

By using a divan or an ottoman, you have easy access to your items. Divans have drawers on either one or both sides that allow you to see exactly what you’ve got stored away. Ottomans open up to reveal either a compartmentalised or single storage area that’s instantly accessible.

Storage beds are multi-functional and come in different shapes and sizes, to suit any size room. They can be used for adults and kids and are a great idea for spare bedrooms or guest rooms.

Types of storage bed

While you can buy sofa beds with storage and kid’s ‘cabin beds’ (a bunk bed with storage and even a workspace underneath), the most common types of storage options are divans or ottomans. The key difference is in the accessibility and design of the storage area.

Style also comes into the equation when you’re planning your décor. If you’re going for a light, airy feel then bear in mind that both ottomans and divans have solid, enclosed bases. They are also a substantial piece of bedroom furniture. What you can play around with is whether you go for a contemporary look or a more traditional design. You can finish your choice off with a flourish by adding a headboard. Both ottomans and divan bases will fit standard-sized headboards.

Ottoman storage beds

Ottomans provide plenty of storage and are a popular choice for smaller spaces. If your bedroom has a smaller area around the sides of the bed, there may not be enough room for you to access a divan drawer easily. Ottomans lift up from the base. They are either hinged at the head and lifted from the foot of the base, or from the left or right side, depending on the design. That means you can easily get to your storage area. The ‘lid’ is either manually raised (and is usually on a counter lever system to keep it lightweight and easy to raise) or has an automatic remote-control unit that lifts the base at the push of a button.

You can see exactly how an ottoman works by taking a look at our range of ottoman beds. You’ll also be able to find out more about the types of mattresses that are suitable for ottomans, from sprung mattresses to space-age Memory Foam options.

Benefits of ottoman storage beds

  • A larger storage area with no divided compartments so less lost space
  • Instant access to your storage area and an instant visual of what’s stored
  • Open vertically, so are suitable for smaller rooms
  • Manual (assisted) or automatic opening
  • Can be used with any type of mattress, including memory foam and pocketed sprung options
  • Easy to assemble – usually come flat-packed and are simple to install
  • Durable and long lasting – the solid base makes ottomans strong and robust beds that last for years
  • Standard headboards will fit with no modifications

Divan storage beds

The alternative to ottoman storage beds are divans. The divan has been around for longer than the ottoman, with the simple difference that they incorporate a drawer system rather than a vertically accessed storage space.

Divans can have between one and four drawers, depending on the design chosen. Double divans usually have two or four drawers. Whereas single divans have one or two drawers and are ideal for guest rooms or children’s bedrooms.

The main factor to consider if you’re thinking about a divan is the space surrounding the sides of the bed. You will need a reasonably large area so that the drawers can be opened easily and to their full extent. Divans have a solid base and often come with casters or wheels, so they can be moved. However, it’s easier to ensure that you have unhindered access to the drawers when the bed is in its normal position. This is rather than having to move it every time you need to get the winter blankets out of storage!
