Small Single Mattresses

A small single mattress is the perfect size for kids transitioning to their first 'proper' bed, or for smaller bedrooms. Slightly narrower than a regular single mattress but just as long, a 2ft 6 small single mattress offers comfort and practicality.

Help & Buying Guides

What size is a small single mattress?

As the name suggests, a small single mattress is a somewhat smaller version of a single mattress. Measuring 2ft 6” by 6ft 3” (or 75cm by 190cm), they’re the smallest of the standard UK mattress sizes available to buy – but that’s not necessarily a limiting factor.

Shortened to help save on space, 2ft 6” mattresses are still available in standard pocket sprung and memory foam variations, as well as all the typical UK mattress firmness ratings, meaning even these small mattresses can cater to all manner of different sleeping preferences.

What’s the difference between a single and a small single mattress?

Unlike a small single mattress, a standard single mattress is slightly larger in size, sitting at 3ft by 6ft 3” (or 90cm x 190cm). Designed to fit a standard single bed, they’re the most common size for single mattresses and offer sleepers that little bit of extra wiggle room if they want to stretch out.

What age is a small single mattress best suited for?

A small single mattress is perfect if you’re considering buying a small single mattress for your child, specifically for those between the ages of 4 and 7 or any child who has just grown out of their toddler bed and needs something a bit bigger to keep them comfortable at night.

What are the benefits of a small single mattress?

By far the main benefit of investing in a small single mattress is its size. Being slightly narrower than a normal single mattress, a 2ft 6” mattress can fit into far smaller bedroom areas in order to maximise the floor space you have available – while still giving you a good night’s sleep.

And, of course, being so small, they’re an ideal mattress choice when buying your child’s first bed. Be it for a small bedframe, a bench bed, or even a bunk bed setup, your child will have plenty of space to play in their room during the day and all the space they need to snuggle up at night.

What to consider when choosing your 2ft 6” mattress

While all mattress sizes share similar qualities, such as their material types and firmness levels, there are a few specific things you’ll want to think about before you settle on buying a small single mattress:

  • Bedroom size – like we’ve said already, small single mattresses are ideal for small sleeping spaces. However, if you have a bigger room, then you might want to consider a larger single or double mattress to give yourself extra area in bed.

  • Mattress needs – whether or not you want to buy a small single mattress will also come down to what you need your new bed for. If you're buying a new mattress for your child, then a small single is ideal. On the other hand, if you’re fitting out a guest room for regular visitors, then a standard single mattress or larger may be better suited for your needs.

  • Sleeping preferences – as with any mattress, you’ll want to make sure you take the time to consider the right firmness rating and filling type for your new small single to maximise comfort levels for its user.

  • Budget – as the smallest mattress size, small singles are by far the cheapest type of mattress you can buy. This makes the incredibly budget-friendly, but if you have more to spend, then you should definitely consider a larger mattress size.

To find a new mattress that meets your specific needs and requirements, you can use our MattressFinder™ tool. Simply answer a few simple questions and you'll be paired with the perfect mattress type for you, then just select a small single as your preferred size!

How much does a small single mattress cost?

A 2ft 6” mattress is almost always going to be the cheapest mattress that you can find to buy, with many of the cheapest models costing £100 or less. Of course, like with larger mattresses, the more you pay, the better the quality of your new bed will be, so don’t be afraid to splash out a little on top brand if you have the budget to do so.
