What is a hypoallergenic mattress?

A hypoallergenic mattress is specifically designed to reduce allergies and prevent triggering allergic reactions. Hypoallergenic mattresses absorb excess moisture and prevent the build up of bacteria which lead to allergic reactions. Hypoallergenic mattresses are treated to prevent things like dust, mould, and mildew from building up on your mattress, which are all things that commonly cause allergic reactions. Hypoallergenic mattresses are different to anti-allergy mattresses, which actively detect and kill these allergens, rather than simply prevent them for a fresher feel.

Our range of expertly engineered hypoallergenic mattresses are made from materials with anti-bacterial and antimicrobial properties.

What is an anti-allergy mattress?

The best type of mattress for allergy sufferers, an anti-allergy mattress is made from certain materials and designed in such a way as to actively repel allergens, dust mites, and other allergy triggers. They are often treated with chemicals and are endorsed by Allergy UK. For example, Jay-Be have a range of children's anti-allergy mattresses which are treated with Purotex®  - this 100% natural probiotic technology actively absorbs moisture to reduce the presence of dust-mite allergens.

How does an anti-allergy mattress work?

Anti-allergy mattresses can be treated to actively repel or deactivate allergens on contact or are made using tightly woven fabrics that prevent a barrier around the inside of your mattress that these allergens can’t penetrate.

As mentioned, anti-allergy mattresses can also be treated with an antimicrobial treatment, which prevents the growth of bacteria and mould, and prevents moisture buildup.

What's the difference between anti-allergy and hypoallergenic mattresses?

While they are very similar, anti-allergy mattresses have a slightly different purpose to hypoallergenic mattresses. An anti-allergy mattress is designed to actively combat the development and build up of dust mites, pollen and other triggering allergens, whereas hypoallergenic mattresses are much less likely to cause a negative or allergic reaction.

However, anti-allergy mattresses refer to common allergens such as the ones mentioned above. If you have specific allergies to certain materials, such as latex or polyester, you should speak to one of our Sleep Experts or speak to Kip, our AI chat bot to find the perfect mattress for you.

Do I need a hypoallergenic mattress?

If you suffer from seasonal allergies or simply if dust tends to make you sniffly, a hypoallergenic mattress can create a healthier sleeping environment for you. If you suffer from seasonal allergies or asthma, you may find a hypoallergenic mattress reduces your likelihood of a reaction, as pollen and other allergens will find it harder to settle.

A hypoallergenic mattress is also ideal for anyone who wants to ensure their bed is kept as clean and hygienic as possible. While cleaning your mattress and bed regularly can prevent the build up of bacteria, a hypoallergenic mattress will ensure any sweat build up or dirt that is harder to clean is prevented from causing a reaction.

Hypoallergenic mattresses are also great for children as they have a weaker immune system so need extra protection against dust mites and other allergens. Many of our kids mattresses have hypoallergenic properties to ensure a healthy, safe sleeping surface for your child.

What types of mattresses are hypoallergenic?

Memory foam mattresses are generally good for allergy sufferers as bacteria and allergens find it difficult to establish within the tight structure of the foam.

Similarly, latex mattresses can have hypoallergenic properties and are slightly firmer than memory foam, ideal if you also suffer from back pain.

How can I prevent allergies at night?

A hypoallergenic mattress will reduce the likelihood of you suffering an allergic reaction at night. However, you should ensure your bedroom is free of common allergens like dust and pet hair. Pollen can also be carried on your clothes, so ensure you change your clothes before getting into bed.
