Everything was straightforward from choosing my mattress through to next day delivery. The delivery was great and I could even see where the driver was on route so knew exactly when he would arrive. Highly recommended and would definitely use again.

How big is a single mattress?

While a single mattress might be on the small end of the mattress size scale, this doesn’t mean they’re not suitably big enough for sleepers of all heights. Measuring 6ft3” by 3ft (or 190cm x 90cm), a 3ft single mattress is more than roomy enough for a single adult, and provides plenty of extra room if acting as a kids mattress.

To put it another way, a single mattress is the optimum bed choice for when space is tight or your budget is limited, ensuring you can still get a great night’s sleep, regardless of your bedroom size.

Why choose a 3ft single mattress?

Given their smaller stature, you might be wondering why you might choose a 3ft single mattress over a traditional double mattress or even a king-sized bed – after all, is bigger not always better in the mattress world?

Well, despite their smaller stature, the limited size of single mattresses is actually one of its greatest strengths. Able to fit into any sized bedroom, mattresses of this size offer you unmatched versatility when it comes to fitting out a spare room, a smaller master bedroom, or if you and your partner prefer to sleep in separate beds.

Indeed, 3ft single mattresses truly shine when placed in restrictive environments, such as in a studio flat, one-bed flat, or in a child’s room where bunk beds might be the only option. Coming in all types of styles and mattress firmness ratings, their snug size is no hindrance when it comes to getting a full night’s rest.

What to consider when buying a single mattress

Like their larger counterparts, there are several things you’ll need to consider before buying a single mattress. From the firmness to its design, your 3ft mattress should meet all the same criteria for comfort and support that you’re used to, which is why we recommend ticking off all of the following before you make your purchase:

  • Bedroom size – first things first, before committing to buying a mattress of this size, you need to examine how much bedroom space you have. As we’ve already mentioned, small single mattresses are great for tighter spaces, but if you have quite a big bedroom, then you might want to consider investing in a larger double mattress instead.

  • Mattress size requirements – alongside how much bedroom space you have, you’ll also want to think about how large a mattress you need. If it’s just for you, or for your child, then a single mattress offers more than enough sleeping room. However, if you like to spread out in bed, or you’re looking to share with your partner, then a smaller double mattress may be better.

  • Your sleeping preferences – whether you enjoy a firm mattress or a soft mattress, pocket sprung or memory foam, make sure you take note of what style of mattress you like to sleep on so you can purchase one that meets these criteria.

  • Your budget – being smaller than most other mattress sizes, single mattresses tend to be on the cheaper side. So, if you’re on a smaller budget, a mattress of this stature could be an ideal cost-saving option.

How much does a 3ft single mattress cost?

As we’ve just mentioned, single mattresses typically cost less than larger options simply because they are smaller in size and cost less to produce. However, you can pay as little or as much as you want for a 3ft single mattress, depending on the different fillings and structures you prefer.

For example, here in the MattressNextDay range, we have cheap single mattresses that cost as little as £100, while our high-end brand options start at around £500, so make sure you take your time browsing to find a suitable design that’s within your personal budget.
