Why is a 2ft 6
A small single 2ft 6" mattress shaves a crucial 15cm (6 inches) off a standard single bed. That might not sound like much, but when planning your home layout, it opens up a world of possibilities:
Toddler transitions: The narrower width feels much cosier and less intimidating for young children moving out of a cot, helping them feel secure while still having more room to wriggle. Read our guide to Kids' Bed Sizes for more help knowing which type of mattress is best for your little one.
For tiny box rooms: If you are trying to squeeze a bed, a desk, and a wardrobe into a small bedroom, this ultra-compact size ensures the door can still open, and floor space is maximised. Read our Home Measuring Guide for more advice on choosing the right bed size for your home.
Caravans and cabin beds: Standard sizes often do not fit custom-built furniture or holiday homes. The 75cm width is the go-to standard for bespoke, space-saving frames.
Types of narrow mattresses
Because small single mattresses are commonly used by children and young adults, our Sleep Experts recommend the following types to ensure a fully supportive night's sleep:
Pocket Sprung Small Singles: The best option for breathability. Individual springs offer tailored support that adapts perfectly as your child grows, ensuring healthy spinal alignment.
Memory Foam Small Singles: Naturally resistant to dust mites, making them a fantastic, hypoallergenic choice for children with asthma or allergies. The foam offers a gentle, cushioning "hug."
Hybrid Small Singles: Combining the bounce of traditional springs with a soft foam top. These are highly resilient and can withstand the wear and tear of active kids.

Small single 2ft 6
What size is a small single mattress in cm?
A standard UK small single measures 75cm in width and 190cm in length (2ft 6" x 6ft 3"). This makes it the narrowest standard bed size available before dropping down to specialised cot sizes. Read our Mattress and Bed Size Guide to see how this compares to other mattress sizes.
Will normal single bedding fit a 2ft 6" mattress?
You can use standard 3ft single duvets (they will just drape a little further down the sides, which feels extra cosy). However, for fitted sheets and Mattress Protectors, you must buy specific 2ft 6" (75cm) sizes; otherwise, the sheets will bunch up and slip off during the night.
Is this size safe for a top bunk?
Yes, but you must check the thickness. Safety regulations state that mattresses for top bunks or high sleepers must not exceed 16cm in depth to ensure the safety guard rails remain effective. Check out our dedicated Bunk Bed Mattresses section for compliant options, or read our Bunk Bed Buying Guide.
Can an adult sleep on a small single?
Yes. Because the length (190cm) is exactly the same as a standard single or double bed, it will comfortably fit an average adult. It is simply a narrower sleeping surface, making it a great temporary solution for guest sleepovers in very tight rooms!
