What is a zip and link mattress?

Got a guest room that needs to accommodate couples and single people at any time? A zip and link mattress could be the answer!

As the name suggests, zip and link mattresses are made of two single mattresses, connected together using a zip or linking solution to form a full-sized super king mattress.

As a result, you can use it as a super king size bed, or split it into two singles whenever you need. This is ideal for guest rooms and hotels, as you may need to mix up the sleeping arrangements - a zip mattress means you don't have to spend money on too many types of mattresses, you can just zip or unzip!

Why choose a zip and link mattress?

The many benefits of zip-together mattresses are hard to overlook. In fact, you could easily say that everyone can benefit from a zip-and-link mattress. Not only are zip and link mattresses great for their versatility, but couples can benefit from them due to you each essentially having your own mattress.

Not only can you relax on a mattress style you love, but it also makes rolling together a lot harder, which is a definite plus for many of us.

But it’s not just couples who stand to benefit from zip-together mattresses. This type of mattress is also the right choice in plenty of scenarios, such as:

  • Anyone looking for a large mattress – if you want a large mattress, but your home has a narrow staircase or an entrance that is difficult to navigate, a zip and link mattress can be delivered as two separate mattresses, delivered to your room, and then linked together once unpacked.

  • Flexible sleeping accommodation – if you need to accommodate house guests, but don’t want to purchase additional beds and mattresses, a zip-together mattress can easily be separated into two beds and used separately.

  • Varied slatted supports – if the super king frame you’ve chosen has separate slatted supports for each side, a zip and link mattress will ensure sufficient separation for each half to move independently.

Of course, zip mattresses come with plenty of other benefits on top of these, and are certainly worth your consideration if you’re looking for maximum mattress flexibility.

Is a zip-together mattress one or two mattresses?

As the name suggests, a linked mattress is both of these things! When joined together, zip and link mattresses act as a single super king sized mattress. However, by unzipping them, you’re left with two single ones instead.

You can read about the benefits of putting two singles together to form a superking in our guide, Should You Buy A Super King Or Two Singles?

How will a zip-and-link mattress help me to sleep better?

A core benefit of a zip and link mattress is that when zipped together to make a super-king bed, couples can enjoy their own 'half' completely independent of their partner, but still share the same bed. This is ideal if you or your partner tend to wriggle around a lot and don't want to disturb the other person. The zip element means you still feel connected to your partner, but this type of mattress removes the likelihood of  'roll together', where you both end up in the middle of the mattress.

Can you turn a zip and link mattress?

Yes, absolutely! In fact, because you’re working with two single mattresses rather than one double, it’s actually much easier to turn them than a traditional mattress.

Naturally, you’ll need to unzip your mattresses before you start, after which you can rotate both individually before rezipping them – just make sure that the zippers line up, otherwise, you won’t be able to zip them back together.

What is a ‘no roll-together’ mattress?

‘Roll-together’ is the term used when two sleepers sharing a double mattress or larger end up rolling into each other during sleep. This typically happens when the centre springs of your mattress start to wear out and press together, creating a dip in the middle of the bed.

Such wear and tear will naturally occur over time, and on its own can lead to accidental rolling. But if the padding above the springs also sags under the tension, it will exacerbate the dip, resulting in two sleepers rolling together in a ‘v’ shape thanks to gravity.

Needless to say, this is likely to have a negative impact on your sleep. However, this is not an issue shared by zip and link mattresses. Here, a couple’s body weight can be spread over the two mattresses, allowing both sleepers to enjoy the support they need while reducing spring compression over time, giving your mattress greater longevity.
