What types of bed pillows are there?

As we've mentioned, we offer pillows made from both natural and man-made materials. Our eco-friendly pillows are sustainable and hypoallergenic, while our artificial pillows come in an array of styles for all needs.

Anti-allergy pillows

Made from specialist anti-allergy materials, these types of pillows are ideal for those who suffer from allergies triggered by dust, canker, mites, or pollen. They’re also particularly good for people who suffer from respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD, which can easily be triggered by the presence of allergens.

Anti-allergy pillows are affordable and easily available. They come in a standard size and can take almost any kind of pillowcase or cover. They are not always washable, but some types of anti-allergy pillow can be put through a cool wash. Replace regularly to prevent them from becoming dirty or soiled.

Memory foam pillows

Memory foam pillows are made from the same kind of memory foam as is used in memory foam mattresses. They are particularly good for those who prefer a slightly firmer pillow, and do not lose their shape or ‘flatten out’ over time. Memory foam pillows provide you with exceptional support, and respond to the shape of your head, neck, and shoulders. They can be a little warm for some as memory foam does tend to retain heat, so look for options that incorporate cool gel if you prefer a cooler feel.

Natural pillows

Natural pillows are made from natural materials, rather than man-made options. They are usually filled with feather and down from ducks to create a luxurious and exceptionally soft option. Wool is also used in the manufacture of natural pillows, which produces a slightly firmer option when compared to feather and down versions.

Natural pillows are more expensive, but they do represent value for money as they’re long-lasting and resistant to mites and allergens. They can be easily restored to their initial shape by simply shaking to distribute the feathers and down evenly before use.

Luxury pillows

Similar to our luxury beds, luxury pillows are top-quality pillows that incorporate premium materials into their manufacture, such as Damask or Egyptian cotton covers, down filling, or additional extras such as a cool-touch finish. They can also be larger than the standard size, measuring up to 80cm x 80cm.

Luxury pillows often fall under the category of ‘Hotel Quality pillows’ and are also available with microfibre anti-allergen fillings. You may pay a little more for a luxury pillow, but they represent real value for money as they last longer, are more supportive, and are less likely to lose their shape and their ‘bounce-back’ over time when compared to cheaper options.

Hollowfibre pillows

Hollowfibre pillows are soft with plenty of bounce-back, making them super comfortable and longer lasting than fibres that flatten out over time. They provide exceptional levels of support and are ideal for those who suffer from neck or shoulder pain, or who prefer a slightly firmer feel.

They’re also referred to as microfibre or polyester pillows and use fine fibres that are spun into a thicker, denser type of filling. They’re affordable and good value, making ideal pillows for guest bedrooms. To keep them at their best, give them a good shake occasionally to restore air pockets in between the microfibres.

Latex pillows

Latex pillows use natural latex that’s incredibly supportive and comfortable, which why we use it in our latex mattresses too. These pillows act in a similar way to memory foam pillows but use natural materials rather than high-density foam. They’re breathable, naturally hypoallergenic, anti-microbial and prevent dust mites from taking up residence, making them ideal for sleepers who suffer from dust-triggered allergies or respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Latex is breathable, so latex pillows offer a cooler, fresher feel that some people may prefer. They’re long-lasting and offer excellent support for the neck, head, and shoulders. They also bounce back easily and tend not to flatten out over time compared to cheaper, man-made options.

What should I look for when buying a bed pillow?

We all know how important it is to choose the best pillows to buy. But how do you know that it’s the right pillow for you? One of the key factors to keep an eye on is the filling. From goose feather pillows to medical grade foam pillows from the very best pillow brands, our easy to navigate website makes finding your next bed pillow a walk in the park.

Pillow firmness is also important – just how soft do you want your pillow to be? Firmness levels run in the same way as their mattress counterparts, from soft to extra firm, each with their own characteristics. Those at the softer end of the scale are the best pillows for back and stomach sleepers, while an extra firm pillow is perfect for soothing neck pain. You should also consider how many pillows you should sleep with, and whether you need to add to your bed set-up.

What are side sleeper pillows?

If you sleep on your side, the most important thing to consider is the amount of support your pressure points require. Finding the best pillow for shoulder pain can help with this. As the side sleeping position forces the hip and shoulder closest to the mattresses to sink in, it adds tension to that side of the body which needs to be supported.

To receive this additional support, the best pillow for side sleepers tends to be thicker in design, helping to achieve the spinal alignment required for a comfortable sleep.
