      Sprung Slat Beds

A bed frame with sprung slats is perfect if you’re looking for extra bounce and flexibility from your bed. This type of bed pairs perfectly with soft and medium mattresses, with the upward curved slats acting as a mini suspension system to offer you more ‘give’, preventing a too-firm, rigid feeling.

      What are sprung slats?

Sprung slats are made from flexible, laminated wood (usually beech or poplar) that are bowed upwards. This design means that when you lie on them, they gently flatten to adjust to your weight, absorbing pressure and giving a cushioned feel that works alongside your mattress. This design also lets your mattress move more comfortably, so it can adapt to your shape and movements more easily.

Sprung slats are the opposite of solid slats, which are firm, straight pieces of wood with little ‘give’. You can understand the difference in our guide, Solid Slat Vs Sprung Slat Bed Frames.

Why choose a sprung slat bed frame?

A sprung slatted base is ideal for adding a bit of extra bounce to your bed. If you prefer a softer, more cushioned bed, they have a natural ‘give’ that enhances pressure relief, which is perfect for side sleepers.

This style of bed also protects your mattress by absorbing the pressure of your movements, putting less strain on the springs and materials within your mattress.

What type of mattress can I use on sprung slats?

As you can learn in our guide to choosing a mattress for a slatted bed frame, you can pretty much place any type of mattress on sprung slats, including memory foam mattresses. Just remember to keep the slats at least 7cm apart to prevent them from dipping through the gaps.

Remember that sprung slats add more bounce, so if you have a firm mattress, you might prefer solid slats instead. Sprung slats are better suited to soft or medium mattresses, as they add to that indulgent, comforting feeling.

What way up do sprung slats go?

Slats on a bed base always have a downward curve. This means that the centre of the slat is at the highest point, like an upside-down U or ‘frown’. When you lie on your mattress, the slats will gently flatten, so if you’ve installed them upside down, they won’t be able to give you any support.

What types of sprung slatted beds are available?

Our collection of beds with sprung slats features models in all shapes and sizes; from stylish metal sprung slat beds like the Emily Cream Bed to wooden storage sprung slat beds like the Phoenix Ottoman, plus upholstered options too!
