Eco Friendly Mattresses

Why choose an eco friendly mattress?

Eco friendly mattresses use materials or production choices intended to lower their environmental impact. This could include natural latex, organic cotton, organic wool, recycled components or foam made partly with plant-derived ingredients.

You’ll still have plenty of choice around comfort and support:

• Natural fillings can create a breathable, cushioned surface

• Latex offers a springier feel that responds quickly as you move

• Plant-based foams tend to feel closer and more contouring

Check the full product specification before you buy, as eco credentials can apply to one material rather than the whole mattress. You’ll find information on fillings, construction, and relevant certifications on each product page, making it easier to compare your options.

How to choose the right eco friendly mattress

An eco mattress could be a great fit if you want comfortable support alongside more environmentally friendly materials.

This range may suit you if:

• You’d prefer natural, renewable or recycled materials where available

• You’re looking for certified organic cotton, wool or latex

• Strong new-mattress smells tend to bother you

• You like the breathable feel of wool, cotton or latex

You don’t have to choose between your comfort preferences and your values. Compare soft, medium and firm options on MattressNextDay, then check the materials inside each mattress to find the right match.

Choosing between vegan and organic wool mattresses

Vegan and organic mattresses suit different buying priorities. Organic wool is a natural, breathable filling, although it still comes from animals. A vegan mattress avoids animal-based materials, but it may include synthetic or plant-based foams.

If you’re shopping for a vegan option, check every layer rather than focusing on the main filling – wool can also appear in covers or fire-resistant layers.

Natural latex vs. plant-based foam: Which is right for you?

The benefits of a chemical-free and hypoallergenic sleep environment

If you’re sensitive to strong smells, look for mattresses made with lower-emission materials or products carrying recognised emissions testing. These options may have less noticeable off-gassing after unpacking, helping your new mattress feel more comfortable to bring into your bedroom.

Natural latex, cotton and wool are also popular with sleepers who want a more breathable surface. Latex has an open, responsive structure, while wool and cotton can help manage moisture and keep the mattress feeling fresh.

For allergy sufferers, useful features may include:

• Hypoallergenic fillings

• Lower-emission foam

• Breathable natural fibres

• Removable or washable covers

• Clear cleaning and care instructions

No mattress can guarantee an allergy-free sleep environment, so always check the full material list if you have a known sensitivity. Once you know which materials you want to avoid, use the filters or ask our team to help narrow the range.

Still choosing between natural latex, organic wool and plant-based foam? Our expert answers common questions to help you narrow down the range and buy with greater confidence.

Martin Seeley, Product Expert at MattressNextDay, answers questions about eco friendly mattresses.

How much do eco friendly mattresses cost?

There isn’t one set price for an eco mattress. The cost will depend on the size, support system and amount of natural or certified material used.

A lower-priced option may include plant-based foam or a smaller layer of natural fillings. Mattresses with deeper layers of natural latex, organic fibres or more advanced pocket springs can cost more, although they may also offer a more responsive feel, richer comfort layers or a longer guarantee.

Before choosing, compare:

• The size and firmness

• The main comfort fillings

• The spring or support system

• Which materials are certified

Use the price filter to stay within your budget, then compare the products that offer the feel and materials you want.

Are eco friendly mattresses worth paying more for?

They can be, especially if you value natural materials, organic certification or lower-emission construction. The mattress should still provide the comfort and support you want, so don’t choose on its eco credentials alone.

Compare the fillings, spring system and guarantees before buying. Our Lowest Price Promise also helps you get a competitive price once you’ve found the right option.

Which eco mattress is best for hot sleepers?

Natural latex, cotton and wool may suit sleepers who prefer a breathable mattress. Latex allows air to move through its open structure, while cotton and wool can help manage heat and moisture around the surface.

Use the product filters to compare natural fillings, then choose a firmness that suits your sleeping position and preferred feel.

Are eco friendly mattresses suitable for allergy sufferers?

Some eco mattresses may suit allergy sufferers, particularly those made with hypoallergenic or lower-emission materials. Removable covers and clear cleaning instructions can also help keep the mattress fresher.

Check the full specification if you’re sensitive to latex, wool, or any other specific material. Our team can help you check an individual mattress before you order.

How long do eco-friendly mattresses last?

An eco-friendly mattress can last just as long as a conventional mattress, though its lifespan depends on the materials, construction, and how well it’s cared for.

Natural latex and supportive pocket spring models are often chosen for their durability, and using a mattress protector and rotating the mattress as recommended can help it wear more evenly.

Check the guarantee on each product page before you buy, as this can help you compare long-term value alongside comfort, materials and price.

Are organic wool mattresses vegan?

No. Organic wool is still an animal-based material, even when it’s produced and processed to an organic standard.

Look for a wool-free option if you want a vegan mattress. Check the complete materials list for wool, silk or other animal-based fillings, or speak to our team for help finding a suitable product.
