        Easy to order

Easy to order, found what I was looking for quickly, email verifying my order, and further emails telling me about delivery, was sent email today stating time of delivery with a code, to give delivery driver only if I was satisfied with the service, appears to be very well organised and if delivery goes well tomorrow then I would say it is an excellent service. Delivery came on time, constant updates as to where you are in line for your delivery, I would certainly use again.

      Help & Buying Guides

      Why buy mattresses for arthritis?

If you experience arthritis-related discomfort at night, choosing a mattress that balances cushioning with reliable support may help you rest more comfortably. Pressure-relieving comfort layers can reduce the feeling of pressure around sensitive joints, while a supportive mattress core helps maintain a comfortable sleeping posture.

At MattressNextDay, you can compare mattresses for arthritis by firmness, construction, size and price. Our range includes cushioning memory foam and responsive hybrid designs, so you can find an option that suits your individual comfort needs, with convenient delivery and expert buying guidance available.

How to choose the best mattress for arthritis and joint pain

The best mattress for arthritis depends on where you experience discomfort and how you normally sleep. Start by identifying the areas that need cushioning, then consider how easily you can move and change position during the night.

Find the right balance of firmness and cushioning

A medium or medium firm mattress is often a useful starting point for people with joint discomfort. It can provide gentle cushioning around your hips and shoulders while offering enough underlying support to keep your body comfortably aligned.

      Compare mattress materials

Memory foam contours around your body and can help distribute pressure more evenly. Hybrid mattresses combine comfort layers with springs, providing a little more bounce, which may make turning over and getting out of bed easier.

      Consider mobility and edge support

If arthritis affects your knees, hips, or hands, look for a mattress with a stable edge that feels supportive when sitting or standing. You may also like a responsive mattress that makes changing sleeping positions less effort.

      Think about your sleeping position

Side sleepers usually benefit from extra cushioning around the shoulders and hips, while back sleepers may prefer a steadier mattress that supports the lower back. Consider mattress size and bed height too, particularly if stiffness makes getting in and out of bed difficult.

Buying guidance for mattresses for arthritis

Arthritis can affect different joints, so it's worth thinking about your individual symptoms when choosing a mattress. Some people need extra cushioning around their shoulders and hips, while others may find that a mattress that's easier to move around on may be more comfortable.

Choosing a mattress for different types of arthritis

Osteoarthritis commonly affects joints such as the hips, knees and spine. If these are particularly sensitive, consider a mattress with pressure-relieving comfort layers that gently cushion the body without allowing it to sink too deeply.

Rheumatoid arthritis can affect multiple joints, including the hands, wrists and shoulders. If stiffness makes changing position or getting out of bed difficult, a mattress with stable edges and a little bounce may make changing positions easier.

Your preferences may also change as symptoms fluctuate, so prioritise overall comfort and ease of movement rather than choosing firmness based on your diagnosis alone.

      Could an adjustable bed help?

An adjustable bed allows you to raise your head or legs to find a more comfortable resting position. This may be useful if lying completely flat feels uncomfortable or you require assistance moving into a seated position.

Make sure you choose a mattress specifically compatible with an adjustable base, as some mattress constructions aren't designed to bend.

      Getting the bed height right

If you find standing up or sitting down difficult, the combined height of your mattress and bed base is worth checking. Ideally, you should be able to sit on the edge of your bed with your feet comfortably reaching the floor.

Consider the mattress depth alongside your bed frame and look for good edge support to provide a stable surface when getting in and out.

Everyone experiences arthritis differently, so what feels comfortable for one person may not work for another. If you're unsure which mattress features are suitable for your symptoms or mobility needs, speak to your GP, physiotherapist or occupational therapist for personalised advice.

Ask the expert about mattresses for arthritis

Choosing a mattress when you have arthritis can raise questions about firmness, pressure relief and how easily you'll be able to move in bed. Our product experts explain the main features to compare, helping you find a mattress that suits your sleeping position and personal comfort needs.

Martin Seeley, Product Expert at MattressNextDay, answers common questions about mattresses for arthritis and joint pain.

Note: The advice below is intended to help you compare mattress features and make an informed purchase. It is general sleep and product guidance, rather than medical advice. For recommendations relating to your arthritis or individual health needs, please consult a qualified healthcare professional.

What is the ideal mattress firmness for arthritis sufferers?

A medium or medium firm mattress is often a good starting point for someone with arthritis, as it can balance cushioning around sensitive joints with support for a comfortable sleeping posture.

However, the best firmness depends on your weight, sleeping position and the joints affected. Avoid assuming that extra firm means better, especially if pressure against your joints causes discomfort.

Is memory foam or a hybrid mattress better for arthritis?

Both can be suitable, depending on your comfort preferences and mobility. Memory foam gently moulds around your body, distributing weight across the mattress and cushioning pressure-sensitive areas. This may suit people who like a close, cradling feel.

Hybrid mattresses combine comfort layers with a sprung support system, generally giving the mattress a springier feel. If you find it difficult to turn over or get out of bed, a hybrid may be easier to move on. Compare the firmness and comfort layers of individual mattresses rather than relying on the mattress type alone.

What mattress features help with mobility and temperature control?

If joint stiffness affects your movement, look for sturdy edge support and a mattress that doesn't make you feel too sunken in. Reinforced edges can provide a more stable place to sit, while responsive springs or foam may reduce the effort needed to change position. Mattress depth also matters, as a bed that's too high or low can make getting in and out uncomfortable.

For temperature control, consider breathable covers, ventilated comfort layers or cooling-gel designs if you tend to overheat at night. Cooling features may improve sleep comfort, although they don't treat arthritis.

Is an orthopaedic mattress good for arthritis?

An orthopaedic mattress may suit some people with arthritis, particularly those who want a firmer, more supportive bed.

However, the orthopaedic label doesn't guarantee a mattress is suitable for joint pain. Some orthopaedic mattresses are very firm, which may feel uncomfortable against sensitive hips or shoulders. Check the mattress's actual firmness, construction and comfort layers before choosing.

What is the best mattress for hip arthritis?

If arthritis affects your hips, consider a mattress that cushions the hip area while preventing your pelvis from sinking excessively.

Memory foam comfort layers and cushioned hybrid designs are worth comparing, especially if you sleep on your side. If turning over is uncomfortable, you may want a mattress with less of a sinking sensation, making it easier to turn over. Your preferred sleeping position will help determine the most comfortable option.

Can a mattress help with rheumatoid arthritis?

A suitable mattress may make resting more comfortable by supporting your body and cushioning sensitive joints, although it cannot treat rheumatoid arthritis or prevent flare-ups. Because rheumatoid arthritis can affect several joints, consider both pressure relief and ease of movement.

A mattress with good edge support and a surface that's easy to move on may be helpful if stiffness affects your ability to turn over or stand up. If pain regularly disrupts your sleep, speak to your healthcare professional for advice on managing your symptoms.
