What sizes do US mattresses come in?
While you might assume that there is very little difference in the size and style of mattresses used around the world, this couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to American mattresses.
Simply put, the sizes that US mattresses come in have very little in common with their UK counterparts. For starters, US mattresses start out at what’s known as a twin-size, which is around three inches wider than a UK single.
After that, they increase in width and length through the twin XL and small double before arriving at ‘full-sized’ mattresses, which are roughly the equivalent of a UK double mattress in terms of size.
Finally, from there, it moves onto American queen-sized mattresses, which are so big they’re actually slightly larger than standard UK King-size mattresses, before moving on to US King-size and, finally, the California King which is typically around 12 inches longer than UK Super-king mattresses!
A UK queen is the same as a small double, but an American queen is BIG! You can read more about the difference in our Bed & Mattress Size Guide.
