Hesitated for ages but I neednt have worried. The mattress is a dream, so comfortable and having it delivered next day was fantastic.I paid the extra charge to have it delivered to my bedroom (awkward stairs) and the delivery crew were excellent.

What sizes do US mattresses come in?

While you might assume that there is very little difference in the size and style of mattresses used around the world, this couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to American mattresses.

Simply put, the sizes that US mattresses come in have very little in common with their UK counterparts. For starters, US mattresses start out at what’s known as a twin-size, which is around three inches wider than a UK single.

After that, they increase in width and length through the twin XL and small double before arriving at ‘full-sized’ mattresses, which are roughly the equivalent of a UK double mattress in terms of size.

Finally, from there, it moves onto American queen-sized mattresses, which are so big they’re actually slightly larger than standard UK King-size mattresses, before moving on to US King-size and, finally, the California King which is typically around 12 inches longer than UK Super-king mattresses!

A UK queen is the same as a small double, but an American queen is BIG! You can read more about the difference in our Bed & Mattress Size Guide.

In other words, US mattresses are almost always bigger than their UK counterparts. Take a look at the size comparisons below for a full breakdown.

US sizes and dimensions:

  • Twin mattress – 39” x 75” (3’3” x 6’3”)

  • Twin XL mattress – 39” x 80” (3’3” x 6’8”)

  • Full mattress – 54” x 75” (4’6” x 6’3”)

  • Queen mattress – 60” x 80” (5’0” x 6’8”)

  • King mattress – 76” x 80” 6’4” x 6’8”)

  • California King mattress – 72” x 84” (6’0” x 7’0”)

Tips for buying a US mattress

When it comes to buying a US mattress, it’s good to have a frame of reference so that you know whether your current bed frame is compatible with your new purchase. Because in most cases, you’ll probably need to upgrade in order to accommodate the increased size of your American bed.

So, to start with, you’ll first want to measure the space of your room to make sure it can comfortably fit the size of the American mattress that you desire. After all, the last thing you want is to buy a new bed, only to realise it’ll take up too much space in your bedroom to comfortably use.

Once you’ve measured your bedroom space and are satisfied you can fit a US mattress in it without issue, you’ll next have to measure your bedframe and compare it to the size measurements of your mattress – as we’ve already mentioned, in most cases, your UK-sized frame will likely be too small to properly fit its equivalent US mattress size.

Finally, once you’ve done all this measuring, do your research on which American mattress brand you prefer in our range. Then simply place your order and we’ll have your new bed on its way to you before the day is out.
