Reflex Foam Mattresses

A denser, often firmer alternative to memory foam, a reflex foam mattress is perfect for those looking for extra support. If you enjoy the gentle cushioning that comes from foam moulding to your body shape, but prefer a higher density sleep surface, a reflex mattress is the way to go.

Hesitated for ages but I neednt have worried. The mattress is a dream, so comfortable and having it delivered next day was fantastic.I paid the extra charge to have it delivered to my bedroom (awkward stairs) and the delivery crew were excellent.

Help & Buying Guides

What is a reflex foam mattress?

Made from high-density polyurethane foam, reflex foam mattresses mould to your body by adjusting to your weight and body heat. This is similar to how memory foam mattresses work, however the higher density of reflex foam makes them arguably more supportive, making them excellent orthopaedic mattresses.

Interestingly, the air bubbles within a reflex foam mattress of the foam are larger. So rather than forcing the air out of the mattress under pressure, reflex foam pushes the air bubbles ‘sideways’ so that they pop back into position faster. The result is a highly responsive mattress with a firmer feel.

You can understand more about density in our mattress density and thickness guide.

What are the benefits of reflex foam mattresses?

Reflex foam mattresses are some of the best mattresses for heavier people, as their higher density prevents too much of a 'sink in' feeling. This will provide more support than memory foam, also making it ideal for front and back sleepers.

Other benefits of reflex foam mattresses include:

  • Naturally hypoallergenic
  • Often cheaper than memory foam
  • Minimise motion transference
  • Eliminate pressure points and tension

For more information of these benefits, you can read our reflex foam buying guide.

Reflex foam vs memory foam

Can't decide between a reflex foam mattress and a memory foam one? There are many similarities between the two, however there are some stark differences too. For example, if you have a lighter build, you may find reflex foam too firm. As mentioned reflex foam is ideal for those who weigh more, offering greater support.

You'll also find that reflex foam keeps you 'on top' of the mattress more than memory foam, which encourages you to 'sink in'. If you're older or suffer from arthritis, you might find climbing out of a memory foam bed difficult. Reflex foam will help you enjoy the same body moulding comfort, without you dipping too far into the mattress' surface.

Some mattresses utlilise both reflex foam and memory foam, creating a softer mattress that features the benefits of both types of foam. The Sleepeezee Graphite Echo 3200 Memory Hybrid Mattress, for example, uses reflex foam for its excellent elasticity and 'bounce back', as well as cooling memory foam to contour your body.

Which reflex foam mattress is the best?

There are many types of reflex foam mattresses. They're usually combined with a pocket spring system to create a hybrid mattress, letting you enjoy the targeted support of these innovative springs alongside full-body cushioning foam.

You'll also find that the best children's mattresses feature reflex foam for their firmness, which encourages the healthy growth of your little one's body.

You can also find pure reflex foam mattresses, such as our Value Eco Foam Mattress, or Silentnight's Comfortable Foam Mattress, both of which are excellent budget mattresses that still offer essential support and comfort.

Are reflex foam mattresses good for back pain?

If you're looking for the best mattress for back pain, a reflex foam mattress is an excellent place to start. Due to their higher density and firmer nature, they often have orthopaedic properties which help align your spine and control your posture. This keeps you in the healthiest sleeping position, helping to reduce aches and pains when you wake up.
