Help & Buying Guides

What is a no spring mattress?

Developed to provide a supportive, comfortable sleep surface, springless mattresses use layers of foam rather than traditional spring systems. While pocket sprung mattresses target your pressure points as you move, foam can use your body heat to detect where you require the most support.

Is memory foam better than spring?

You may be under the impression that a mattress without springs will lead to back pain. However, modern sleep technology means that specially designed foam can target your heaviest pressure points just as well, if not more accurately, than pocket springs.

Of course, the perfect mattress for you will depend on your personal needs. No-spring mattresses are ideal for side sleepers as the foam will contour to your body’s natural curvature, supporting you at every pressure point.

Non-spring mattresses are also a great idea for couples, as they offer individual support for both sleepers, with no motion transfer.

Read our guide to Why You Should Consider A Mattress Without Springs for more benefits of a no spring mattress.

What is the best no spring mattress?

A mattress without springs is not any less supportive than its pocket-sprung counterparts. The best springless mattress for you, however, will depend entirely on your needs. The three main types of spring-free mattresses are memory foam-only mattresses, latex, and reflex foam.

Memory foam mattresses were originally developed by NASA. This type of mattress is able to contour your body by reacting to your body temperature, moulding itself to your curves for a personalised support unique to your body shape. Lots of people love memory foam as it's great for a 'sink in' feeling. Our Memory Foam Mattress Buying Guide has more information on this mattress material.

Latex mattresses work similarly; however, they are more breathable than memory foam, providing a cooler night’s sleep without retaining heat.

Reflex foam mattresses also work similarly to memory foam, but are much denser for a firmer feel.

If you’re a particularly hot sleeper or suffer from night sweats, you might want to consider a springless mattress with a cooling gel top layer. This will help regulate your temperature and keep you fresh and cool.

Do no spring mattresses last longer?

Over time, springs lose their ability to bounce back to their original shape, causing the levels of support to deteriorate. Mattresses without springs, however, don’t have this problem and are known for lasting longer than mattresses with springs.

High-quality foam tends to keep its consistency much longer, compressing at a much slower rate. You also won’t have to worry about squeaky springs over time with a spring-free mattress.

Why is my mattress so noisy?

Generally, a mattress without springs is much quieter. If you hear noises when turning over in the night, chances are it's your spring mattress that has aged.

Creaks and squeaks in spring mattresses are not uncommon, especially after a few years of use. This noise problem is exacerbated and much more noticeable if you or your partner are fidgety sleepers.

From day one, springless mattresses are much quieter in comparison and won't get any louder with time.
