      Help & Buying Guides

      Why choose an Emma® mattress?

Emma® is well known for bed-in-a-box mattresses that combine foam layers with practical features designed around everyday comfort. The current UK collection is predominantly hybrid, pairing cushioning foams with pocket springs to provide a balance of pressure relief, support and responsiveness.

      An Emma® mattress can offer:

      • Foam comfort layers that cushion and adapt to your shape

      • Pocket springs for responsive support and airflow

      • A choice of medium-soft, medium and medium-firm feels across the range

      • Different mattress depths to suit your bed and comfort preference

      • Cooling technologies on selected models

      • Removable or washable covers on selected mattresses

How to choose the right Emma® mattress

Start with the type of feel you enjoy. If you like noticeable cushioning but still want some spring and easier movement, an Emma® hybrid mattress combines foam comfort layers with a sprung support core. The amount of cushioning, firmness and temperature regulation varies between models, so it is worth comparing the whole construction rather than choosing by name alone.

      Firmness and comfort

Current Emma® mattresses cover several comfort levels. Think about how much you want to sink into the surface and how easily you like to change position. A firmer mattress generally creates a steadier feel with less sink, while softer designs provide more noticeable cushioning. Your body weight and sleep position can also affect how firm the same mattress feels to you.

      Firmness

      How it feels

      May suit you if

      Soft

Plush with more give and cushioning

You prefer a softer surface that lets you sink further into the mattress

      Medium

      Balanced cushioning with moderate support

You want a comfortable middle ground between soft and firm

      Medium firm

      Supportive with a little cushioning

You prefer a steadier surface without moving to a fully firm feel

      Firm

      Sturdier with less sink

You like stronger resistance and a more supportive sleeping surface

      Extra firm

      Very supportive with minimal give

You prefer the firmest feel available and very little sink

      Mattress depth

Emma® mattress depth currently varies across the range.

Check that your fitted sheets have enough depth and consider the combined height of your mattress and bed frame, particularly if you are moving from a thinner mattress.

      Cooling features

If you tend to feel warm in bed, compare the materials used for airflow and temperature regulation. Selected Emma® mattresses use technologies such as ThermoSync®, which incorporates graphite-infused foam designed to absorb excess heat and move it away from the mattress surface. Other models use open, breathable spring structures or AirGrid® technology to encourage airflow.

      Buying guidance for Emma® mattresses

Emma® mattresses come in different constructions, firmness levels and depths, so a few practical comparisons can make choosing easier. Start with the feel you prefer, then look at support, cooling features and dimensions to narrow the range to an Emma® mattress that suits your sleep setup.

Which Emma® mattress is right for you? Memory foam vs hybrid models

If you have been researching an Emma® memory foam mattress, check which generation of the range you are looking at. Older Emma® mattress reviews may refer to previous all-foam models, while newer Emma® mattresses are largely hybrid designs combining foam comfort layers with springs.

Foam typically provides closer cushioning with less bounce. An Emma® hybrid mattress adds springs beneath the comfort layers for greater responsiveness and airflow. If you prefer a more cushioned, body-hugging feel, focus on the foam layers. If easier movement and a more responsive surface matter to you, a hybrid construction may suit you better.

Emma® mattress specifications and UK size guide

Before ordering, check both your bed frame and the dimensions listed for the individual mattress. Common UK mattress sizes are:

      Size

      UK dimensions

      Single

      90cm x 190cm

      Small double

      120cm x 190cm

      Double

      135cm x 190cm

      King

      150cm x 200cm

      Super king

      180cm x 200cm

A deeper mattress will increase the overall height of your bed, so check your bed frame and fitted-sheet depth too.

Understanding Emma® firmness levels: what independent tests say

Firmness ratings are useful for comparison, but they remain subjective. Your body weight, sleep position and current mattress can all change how firm an Emma® sleep mattress feels.

Independent Emma® mattress reviews can add useful context, particularly where testers find a mattress softer or firmer than its stated rating. Use reviews alongside the official firmness description rather than treating either as a guarantee of comfort.

Ask the expert about Emma® mattresses

Choosing a mattress is easier when you know what to compare. Our product experts answer common questions about Emma® mattresses, including size, depth, maintenance, firmness and delivery.

Martin Seeley, Product Expert at MattressNextDay, answers questions about Emma® mattresses.

What type of mattress is an Emma® mattress?

Emma’s current UK range is predominantly made up of hybrid mattresses. These combine foam comfort layers with pocket springs, giving you cushioning from the foam with additional responsiveness and airflow from the spring unit.

If you encounter an Emma® foam mattress or Emma® Original memory foam mattress in an older review, check the publication date and model details. Emma® previously sold an all-foam Original, while its current Original-branded mattresses use hybrid constructions.

How easy are Emma® mattresses to maintain?

Emma® mattresses are single-sided, so there’s no need for flipping. However, we recommend rotating your mattress from head to foot every few months to keep the fillings evenly distributed and prevent dips from forming.

Because Emma® uses relatively lightweight materials, turning a double or king size Emma® mattress is straightforward. Single sizes are even easier to rotate, so ongoing care is simple and fuss-free.

Are Emma® mattresses memory foam or hybrid?

The current mainstream Emma® UK range is hybrid-led. Models use foam comfort layers above spring systems, although the exact construction differs depending on the mattress.

This means you can still get the cushioning associated with an Emma® memory foam mattress while gaining the more responsive feel and increased airflow that springs can provide.

      How firm are Emma® mattresses?

There is no single Emma® firmness level across the whole collection. Current models range from medium soft through medium to medium firm. Treat those ratings as a comparison tool. Your weight, sleeping position and personal preference will affect how firm each mattress feels in practice.

Are Emma® mattresses good for hot sleepers?

Selected Emma® mattresses include features specifically designed to improve airflow or temperature regulation. ThermoSync® uses graphite-infused foam to absorb and disperse excess heat, while AirGrid® uses an open-grid structure containing air pockets. Other models use breathable spring systems such as InfinitySpring®.

If temperature is one of your main concerns, compare the cooling construction of each mattress rather than assuming every Emma® sleep mattress offers the same level of temperature regulation.

What is the Emma® mattress depth?

Depth depends on the model. Emma® mattresses typically range between 22cm and   30cm, depending on the specific model. Make sure to check the individual product specification before buying because mattress depth affects your finished bed height and the depth of fitted sheet you may need.

What sizes do Emma® mattresses come in?

Emma® mattresses are available in a range of UK sizes, although the exact choice varies by model. Standard UK sizes include singlesmall doubledoubleking and super king.

Measure your existing bed frame before ordering. A UK double measures 135cm x 190cm, while a UK king measures 150cm x 200cm.

How long is the Emma® mattress guarantee?

Emma® mattresses have a 10-year manufacturer guarantee. The applicable terms depend on the product and the type of defect, so read the guarantee details supplied with your mattress rather than relying solely on the headline length.

Can I sleep on an Emma® mattress straight away?

Emma® mattresses are vacuum-packed, rolled and boxed to make delivery and installation as easy as possible, with no more wrestling a full-size mattress up narrow stairs. Once your new mattress is in place, simply unbox it, carefully cut away the packaging and let it unroll.

Most Emma® mattresses will expand to a usable shape within a few hours, but it’s best to allow time for the foams to fully settle and activate. This ensures you get the right level of support and comfort from your very first night.

Can I get next-day delivery on an Emma® mattress?

Free next-day delivery is available across the UK mainland on eligible in-stock mattresses at MattressNextDay. Delivery availability depends on the individual product and location, so check the delivery information shown for your chosen Emma® mattress before placing your order.
