      Help & Buying Guides

Why choose a mattress from MattressNextDay?

Buying a new mattress can feel like a lot to compare: size, firmness, fillings, price, delivery and whether it will actually feel comfortable once it arrives. MattressNextDay brings those choices together in one place, with a wide range of mattresses from trusted brands and options for different sleepers, rooms and budgets.

Whether you want a cheap mattress for a spare room, a supportive mattress for everyday use or one of the best affordable mattress options from a leading brand, you can compare mattresses online and choose with confidence.

How to choose the right mattress

Start with how you sleep and what your current mattress isn't doing well. If you wake up stiff, you may need better support. If you feel too warm, compare breathable materials. If you share a bed, look for steadiness, edge support and reduced movement across the mattress.

      Then compare:

      • Mattress type: Pocket sprung mattresses feel breathable and responsive, memory foam mattresses feel closer and more cushioned, and hybrid mattresses combine springs with comfort layers.

      • Firmness: Side sleepers often need more cushioning, while back and front sleepers may prefer a medium-firm or firm feel.

      • Size: Choose a size that fits both the sleeper and the room, leaving space to move around the bed and open drawers or wardrobes.

      • Budget: A cheaper mattress can work well for a guest room or occasional use, while an everyday mattress is worth choosing for comfort, support and durability.

      • Delivery and setup: Bed-in-a-box mattresses are easier to move into the room, while deeper traditional mattresses may need more space and two people to handle.

Buying guidance for your next mattress

Which mattress type should you choose?

Choose a pocket sprung mattress if you want a more responsive feel with airflow through the spring system. Each spring moves separately, so the mattress can react more locally as you move.

Choose memory foam if you like a closer, more cushioned feel. Foam can be useful if you want the mattress to contour around the body, although some sleepers find dense foam warmer or harder to move on.

Choose a hybrid mattress if you want a mix of both. Hybrids combine a spring support system with foam, gel or other comfort layers, giving you cushioning on top with a more responsive feel underneath.

What firmness is right for you?

Your sleep position is usually the best place to start. Side sleepers often need enough cushioning around the shoulders and hips, while back sleepers may prefer a medium or medium-firm mattressFront sleepers usually need a firmer surface to help stop the hips dipping too far into the mattress.

Body weight matters too. Petite sleepers may find firm mattresses feel harder than expected, while heavier sleepers may need a firmer or deeper mattress to feel properly supported.

What size mattress do you need?

Choose a mattress size that fits the sleeper, the bed frame and the room. A single works well for one sleeper; a small double saves space while offering extra width; a double is a popular choice for couples and guest rooms; and a king-size gives more room to stretch out.

Before ordering, measure the frame and the space around it. You should still be able to walk around the bed and open doors, drawers and wardrobes comfortably.

Martin Seeley, Product Expert at MattressNextDay, answers questions about buying a new mattress.

What type of mattress is best for me?

The best type of mattress depends on how you sleep and what feel you prefer. Pocket sprung mattresses feel responsive and breathable, memory foam mattresses feel closer and more cushioned, and hybrid mattresses combine springs with foam comfort layers.

If you are unsure, start with the problem you want your new mattress to solve, such as feeling too warm, needing more support or wanting a surface that is easier to move on.

What firmness mattress should I choose?

Side sleepers often prefer soft to medium-firm mattresses because they need cushioning around the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers usually suit medium or medium-firm mattresses, while front sleepers often need a firmer surface.

Your body weight can change how firm a mattress feels. Petite sleepers may find firmer mattresses feel very solid, while heavier sleepers may need stronger support or a deeper mattress to avoid sinking too far in.

What’s the best mattress for hot sleepers

Hot sleepers should look at the whole mattress construction, not just one cooling claim. Pocket springs can improve airflow through the support system, while breathable covers, gel layers, latex and open-cell foams can help the surface feel fresher.

Dense foam can feel warmer for some sleepers because it sits closer to the body. If you like foam but sleep hot, compare breathable foam designs, hybrid mattresses or cooling mattresses before choosing.

Is it better to buy a mattress online?

Buying a mattress online can make it easier to compare brands, sizes, materials, reviews and delivery options in one place. It is especially useful if you already know the size and general feel you want.

Look for clear product information, customer reviews, delivery details, trial options and guarantee terms before ordering.

What’s the difference between a bed-in-a-box mattress and a traditional mattress?

A bed-in-a-box mattress is compressed and rolled, which makes delivery and setup easier, especially in flats, tight hallways and smaller bedrooms. It can be a convenient option if you want to buy a mattress online and move it into place more easily.

Traditional mattresses may be deeper, heavier or built with more natural fillings, hand-finished details or pocket spring systems. They can feel more substantial, but may need more care when moving into the room.

What is the best affordable mattress?

The best affordable mattress is one that gives you the right comfort and support for how often it will be used. A budget mattress can work well for a guest room, occasional use or a child’s room, but an everyday mattress should still feel supportive and comfortable night after night.

Compare firmness, depth, materials, reviews and guarantee details rather than choosing your new mattress on price alone.

How do I set up a new mattress?

If your mattress arrives rolled in a box, place the box in the bedroom before opening it. Carefully remove the packaging, unroll the mattress on the bed base and allow it time to expand.

A slight ‘new mattress’ smell can happen with some boxed mattresses. This should usually fade with ventilation, so open a window and let the room air before making the bed.

How do I care for my mattress?

Use a mattress protector from the start and follow the care label. Some mattresses should be rotated from head to toe, while others may need turning as well.

Keep the mattress on a suitable, supportive base. A damaged or uneven bed frame can affect how the mattress feels and wears over time.

How often should I replace my mattress?

Many mattresses last around seven to eight years, but it depends on the build quality, materials, sleeper weight, care and how often the mattress is used.

It may be time to replace yours if it has started to dip, feels uncomfortable, makes you wake up stiff or no longer gives you the support you need.

Can I get next-day delivery on a mattress from MattressNextDay?

Yes, eligible in-stock small double mattresses are available with free next-day delivery across the UK mainland. See the delivery page or individual product pages for the latest information.
