Help & Buying Guides

Finding your perfect double mattress

Whether you simply love that feeling of space or are snuggling up with your partner, you can’t beat a double mattress. It’s the most popular size of mattress in the UK, and is large enough to give you plenty of room to get really comfortable, but won’t overwhelm the average-sized bedroom. That makes double beds a ‘just right’ size for almost any household.

Double mattresses measure a standard 4’6” wide by 6’3” long (135cm x 190cm), so they’re large enough to cater for most average-sized sleepers. If you’re six feet or under then a double mattress should be long enough for you to stretch out and relax without your feet poking through the bottom of the duvet!

Double mattresses come in a huge variety of compositions, designs and firmness ratings, so there’s plenty of choice on offer. They’re produced by some of the largest and most respected names in bedding, including Silentnight, Dormeo, Sealy and Sleepeezee, as well as some luxury brands such as Tuft & Springs and Harrison Spinks. All of these mattresses have one thing in common – they’re designed to give you the best night’s sleep possible.

What's size is a double mattress?

A double mattress size is 4ft 6" by 6ft 3" long (135 x 190 cm). Compared to a small double mattress, a double mattress is 15 cm wider. If you purchase a double bed frame, then the double mattress size is what you will need to fit. Double mattresses are widely available and are the most common mattress size in the UK. This 4ft 6" double mattress is particularly popular among couples as they can comfortably accommodate two adults, plus, they work great with our range of double divan beds.

What is the difference between a double memory foam and a double pocket sprung mattress?

Our two most popular double mattresses include memory foam and pocket sprung technology. However, there are key differences between these two that you should factor in when purchasing your new product.

Double pocket sprung mattress

Pocket sprung mattresses are formed of 1,000 - 2,000 individual springs. These springs move individually to provide more comfort to the body's contours when sleeping. Double pocket sprung mattresses tend to be bouncy, which is perfect for those that prefer a springier feeling as opposed to a sinking feeling. Pocket sprung mattresses are great for ventilation and regulating heat. The spring and fibre combination allows air to move freely and create a comfortable temperature throughout the night.

Memory foam mattress

Double memory foam mattresses are on the firmer side and are ideal for those that prefer a bed they can sink in to. The material transforms to the shape of your body's natural contours for a more tailored sleeping experience. Double memory foam mattresses are particularly great for couples that vary in weight. Because the memory foam adapts to your body, it's a great all-around mattress. Providing support and sinking where needed. A completely custom experience for any shape or sized person. Both styles have their strengths and as always, it comes entirely down to personal preference.

If you’d rather have a different type of mattress, other popular options include latex mattresses, orthopaedic mattresses and organic mattresses, which are ideal if you suffer from allergies.

How often should I replace my double bed mattress?

As a general rule, the Sleep Council recommends replacing your mattress every 8 years. However, it's best to use your judgment. If there is visible dipping in the middle, or if you can feel the springs through it, then it's time for a new one. If your mattress is pinging or creaking when you move it's advised to get a replacement.

To prolong your double bed mattress lifespan, it's recommended you rotate it 180 degrees, every 3 months. This is because we often sleep in the same spot on the bed every night which leads to general wear and tear. Turning the mattress essentially gives the side you slept on a chance to recover and spring back to life.

Mattress protectors also help increase longevity and prevent the risk of dust buildup. Which in turn can cause allergies, bed bugs, and illnesses to arise. In general, protectors are there to keep your mattress hygienic and feeling like new for longer.

How much do double mattresses cost?

The price of a double mattress will entirely depend on what type of mattress you go for, and how much you want to spend. Budget mattresses are usually made using an open coil spring matrix. This is the most traditional method of mattress making, and provides years of comfort and support if maintained properly. An open coil double mattress will cost around £130-£150.

Pocketed spring mattresses have a core of individually pocketed springs, which cut down the amount of movement transference. They’re perfect for couples, and cost around £200 - £300, depending on those extra layers. If you want a more luxurious feel, you can pay more for those that use layers of natural wool, cashmere or silk.

Memory foam mattresses are technologically advanced and super comfortable. They’re also convenient as they come boxed and rolled, making them easier to move. They can range in price from around £300 for a basic model, all the way up to over £1,000 for a top-of-the-range Octaspring option.

Cost will also depend on the size – a standard double bed mattress will be cheaper than a large double or European sizes.

It’s always worth looking out for special offers on double bed mattresses that could save you a lot of money, especially for more expensive mattresses. In some cases, you could cut the cost of your mattress in half, enabling you to buy a better quality mattress for a better night’s sleep.
