Help & Buying Guides

What is a hybrid mattress?

Hybrid mattresses, also known as combination mattresses, combine all the benefits of memory foam mattresses or other types of foam and pocketed sprung mattresses into one complete package.

A fantastic blend of firmness and cushioned support, they provide the reliable steadiness of coiled spring designs, but with the added luxury of the super soft support layer that you can only get from foam.

Why choose a hybrid mattress?

Single and double hybrid mattresses are a great choice if you’re seeking a new mattress that provides a nice middle ground between softness and rigidity. For some people, memory foam is just a tad too soft for their tastes, and a hybrid mattress can provide the little bit of extra support necessary to take the edge off.

On the other end of the spectrum, overly firm pocket-sprung mattresses can be hard to get used to, making a firm hybrid mattress with a gentle foam layer on top a good choice for adding comfort without sacrificing support levels. A pillow-top hybrid mattress can add an even more indulgent level of cushioning, all while keeping you supported with a spring support system.

What is a hybrid mattress made from?

As we’ve already noted, hybrid mattresses of all sizes are made from a unique combination of pocket-sprung and foam technology. Here’s a full breakdown of what goes into a hybrid mattress:

  • The pillow top layer – while not found on all hybrid mattresses, many of these designs come with a soft pillow-top layer, providing a cloud-like feeling as you sink into your mattress at the end of a busy day, without changing your mattress firmness rating.

  • The comfort layer – the layer you sleep on, the comfort layer of a hybrid mattress is designed to deliver plenty of cushioned support. Often made from memory foam or latex mattress materials, it moulds to the shape of your body so that you’re properly supported throughout the night.

  • The sprung core – your hybrid mattresses' support layer, the sprung core is where your mattress springs sit. Usually a grid of individual springs in fabric pockets, the entire matrix works together to distribute and dissipate mattress movement while also letting the mattress ‘breathe’ for better airflow.

  • The base layer – the bottom of your hybrid mattress, the base layer tends to be made up of dense foam, stabilising the structure of the mattress and providing an additional layer of padding.

Are hybrid mattresses good for you?

When it comes to pocket-sprung vs memory foam vs hybrid mattresses, you might be wondering whether or not hybrid mattresses are actually good for you, particularly if you’re used to sleeping exclusively on either a pocket-sprung or memory foam bed.

Well, to this we say, yes – they absolutely are!

Both soft and firm hybrid mattresses provide exceptional levels of comfort and support to correctly align your spine as you sleep and reduce the feeling of pressure points on your hips, shoulders, and lower back, resulting in a more restful night’s sleep overall and making them some of the best mattresses for back pain sufferers.

Which hybrid mattress is best?

Whether you invest in a single hybrid mattress or a double hybrid mattress is up to you, and it mainly comes down to personal preference, your sleeping position, your height, and your weight. Take a look at our mattress buying guide for more tips on what to consider when buying a new mattress.

How much does a hybrid mattress cost?

How much your chosen hybrid mattress costs will depend largely on its size and firmness rating. A single hybrid mattress from our range could cost as little as £150, while some of our hybrid king-sized mattresses can exceed £1,999.

Naturally, the more you pay for a hybrid mattress, the better its quality, but you can find plenty of well-made mattresses at low prices in our collection, many of which are also eligible for free next-day delivery.
